Shore Excursions in South America specially designed for Cruise Passengers

1.-Otway Sound Penguin Colony with stop at Punta Arenas downtown (4-5Hrs)

Leaving out from Punta Arenas, head north on Brunswick Peninsula along the Strait of Magellan. Take a detour to Otway Sound, a beautiful landscape of plains, bays and fjords. Next, proceed to the Pecket Mine, an important open-pit mineral deposit in the region’s gigantic coal mantles. Finally arrive at the penguinera, the nesting ground, of the Magellan penguin (Spheniscus magallanicus). Thousands of birds, which are called “jackass penguins” due to the donkey-like braying sounds they make, they come ashore in the spring to breed and lay eggs here. Before returning to the ship a 30 min stop at the city main square is scheduled for shopping and picture taking.

2.- Punta Arenas City Tour and Fuerte Bulnes (6 Hrs)

Depart from the pier to gain a panoramic view of the city and the Magellan Strait from the La Cruz Hill viewpoint, where a brief but informative lecture of the city and the region is given.  Proceed towards the Salesian Museum, driving through the main avenues of the city. The museum is kept by the Salesians friars and exhibits a magnificent collection of the flora and fauna of the region, besides exclusive relics of the folklore and handicraft of the native Indian tribes. You will also visit the Patagonia Institute, boasting a collection of old local cars and machinery.  Proceed to the cemetery where the tombs of those pioneers have been exceptionally preserved among well-kept gardens and cypress stands. End your tour with a visit to one of the southest forts in the world Fort Bulnes
