MONTEVIDEO SHORE EXCURSIONS

Montevideo walking tour 3.5 hrs This unique tour begins with a transfer to the Old City where you will begin your walk into South American history visiting some of the most important museums in Uruguay. At Plaza Independencia you’ll take your return transfer. Sites visited include: Plaza Zabala: This part of the Old City was a strategic fortification that was governed by Don Bruno Mauricio de Zabala (1682- 1736), a Spanish soldier, Knight of the Order of Calatrava, and outstanding military man. This Square dedicated in his honour is located on the site of the former Spanish Governors’ house and is surrounded by mature trees, gardens and iron gates. Palacio Taranco: This Palace was designed by architects Charles L. Girault and Jules L. Chifflot in Paris between 1907 and 1908. Its construction took place between 1908 and 1910 being originally a private home. In 1975 it was declared a National Historical Monument.

Casa del General Fructuoso Rivera: A notable example of XIX century architecture. The tower, the glazed tiles of the window ledges, and the grilles are attractive points to be admired. This building belonged to a wealthy family named Slavañach before 1834. It was later purchased by General Rivera, founder of one of the country’s main political parties: "Partido Colorado" (Red Party). Rivera was the first constitutional President of the Republic. The house was remodelled hoever, the ground floor and the rustic courtyard preserve their original characteristics. The tower and the majority of the rooms of the upper floors were added later. Since 1942 the National Historical Museum has displayed there nineteen exhibition rooms depicting the history of the country from the Indigenous cultures to the second half of the 20th century.

Iglesia Matriz: This beautiful Cathedral dates back to 1790. Its lovely facade of the Ecclesiastical Tribunal was inspired in the Mediaeval style.

Plaza de la Constitucion: An Italian fountain reminds us of the first water works of the city inaugurated on July 18th 1871. The surroundings include many other buildings od interest such as the Club Uruguay that was built in 1889 by the architect Luis Andreoni. This club used to be the nerve centre of Montevideo’s high society.

Tour concludes at the Pier.

Montevideo Jewish heritage 3.5 hrs

This tour provides insight into Jewish immigration and life in Uruguay throughout the last century. Your tour begins in “Old Town” where Jewish immigrants began to settle at the end of the 19th century. The tour continues through Old Town passing by Golda Meir Square and the Hebraica Maccabi Sports Center, stopping to visit the Sepharadic Synagogue and the main Community Center. Continue to the “Goes” area to view the colorful housing projects built in the early 1920’s, by real-estate developer Emilio Reus, and the old Synagogue. The last portion of the tour will give you a glimpse of present day life with views of the “Pocitos” residential area and Jewish Schools concluding at the Holocaust Memorial - the only one of its kind in South America.
